Transition Year

Transition Year is a one year programme which provides a bridge to enable students make the transition from Junior to Senior Cycle. We have devised a programme which encourages the personal and social development of students. It also helps to prepare them for the Leaving Cert Programme , further study and adult and working life.

Students undertaking the Transition Year Programme will undertake an intensive curriculum over the course of the academic year. This will include a 'hands on' approach in many areas.

  • Community Work – Ennistymon Development Association links and Young Social Innovators.

  • Remote learning including access to Dulan North West Remote learning platform specially planned for students at Ennistymon Vocational School.

Assessment

The school recognizes that assessment is an integral part of teaching and learning process – assessment and certification within Transition Year is school-based. Student will undertake continuous assessment including group work, individual presentations, projects, written and aural/oral class tests. Subject reports will be sent home after Christmas and again in the Summer. Student reflection on their own learning is encouraged through engagement with a student e-Portfolio which students must present at an end of year interview with the TY coordinator.

Certification

The overall certification of the TY option involves a Credit System where students earn credits in their subjects, activities and reflections throughout the year. They may achieve an award of Distinction (80%), Merit (60-79%) or Participation (below 60%). See sample credit system below:

Teachers will award credits in subjects based on the overall year results including; 0-10%= 1, 11-20%= 2, 21-30%= 3, 31-40%= 4, 41-50%= 5, 51-60%= 6, 61=70%=7, 71-80%=8, 81-90%= 9, 91-100% =10

Overall Award: 300 – 400 Credits= Distinction /200- 300= Merit/ 100-200 = Participation.
